Wettbewerbsaufgabe

competition task
The listed residential and commercial building Großer Markt 10 is to be converted into a city library and city information centre. This is why the city of Perleberg announced a competition in which Scheidt Kasprusch Architekten won one of two 2nd prizes. The task of the competition also included the integration of a former cinema hall as well as modern, new premises for the library. Overall, Perleberg hopes that the increased public use will lead to a revival of the marketplace.Leading ideas Preserve and Revive
Preserve and Revive are the two leading ideas for our design of the new city library and city information Perleberg. Unpretentious restraint and differentiated discussion determine the attitude in the elaboration. The different characteristics of the two listed old buildings are worked out and made fruitful for the different uses. The architectural addition avoids harsh contrasts and fits harmoniously into the context. At the same time it creates new spatial qualities and reveals itself as a contemporary building.
New building creates an ensemble as a joint
The new building accommodates all uses required for the front building - the library - as well as for the hall building - the event hall. Its function as a joint or connecting structure is expressed both in the spatial arrangement and in the choice of façade material. The discreetly elegant plaster façade of the front building at Grosse Markt stands in stark contrast to the robust, unplastered brick of the hall building at Schuhstraße. As a new, third façade surface between these antipodes, the muddy masonry of the new building unites the characteristics of the two old buildings and "reconciles" them to form an ensemble.Optimum accessibility and high quality of stay are the aims of the ensemble that is being created. The front building will be used for the city library and city information and will be carefully reconstructed in accordance with the requirements of the listed building. The small-scale structure of the former residential floors and the extended roof accommodate the desired character of a homely living quality in the library.
The former warehouse building and later cinema will be reactivated as an event hall - with counters and storage rooms. The sloping floor is removed and lowered to the level of Schuhstrasse.
The new connecting building at ground level with foyer and WC facilities will also benefit from the increased room height. Despite being restricted by the neighbouring wall to the south, the foyer is thus given a comfortable room height of 4.80 m. The new foyer is also connected to the foyer at ground level.
Arranged at ground level to the foyer, a small atrium is created which can be used as a protected reading courtyard and which supplies the ground floor rooms of the front building and the foyer with natural light.
